To make sure the process of cancelling your business name is fast, easy and ASIC compliant, there’s a few things you need to consider before starting the application. This includes what you’ll need to consider before you starting the process, a summary of what’s involved and what happens after your application has been submitted.
IMPORTANT: You should only cancel your business name if your business is no longer operating. Note, if you’re the current owner of a business name and you have sold your business to another entity, you must transfer the business name rather than have it cancelled. Follow this link to transfer your business name.
Once you submit your application, the cancellation will come into effect 28 days after you receive a ‘Notice of intention to cancel a business name’ from ASIC. This business name will not be available to anyone else to register until 4-6 months after cancellation comes into effect.
1. Your business name
2. ABN number
3. ASIC Key
4. Contact name
5. Address
6. Mobile Phone
7. Email Adress
Once your application has been submitted, ASIC will then send you a notice of intent to cancel the registration of your business name. Then after one month, ASIC will automatically cancel your registration and send another confirmation email with cancellation notice attached.
All the above-mentioned notices are sent to all business name holders (and any representatives) to tell them the business name registration will be cancelled.
Please note that if your business name is successfully cancelled before it is due for renewal, then ASIC is not obliged to reimburse you for the remaining registration period.
