How to transfer a business name?

If you’re the current owner of a business name and you need to transfer it to a new owner, you will need to complete the following steps.

Before you start?

Transferring a business name is a 2-step procedure that involves both the current business name owner and the new business owners.

If you’re the existing business owner who currently owns the business name, you will need to transfer the business name if the new owner wishes to use it. Once the application to transfer the business name is submitted, ASIC will cancel your registration within 28 days.

What do I need?

To transfer your business name, you will need to provide the following information:

a. Current owner details:

Business Name
ABN number
Applicant first name and surname:
Residential address
Date of Birth:
Country of Birth
City of Birth
Mobile number
Email address

b. New Owner Details

Company Name (if application)
ABN Number
Applicant first name and surname:
Residential and business address:
Date of Birth
Country of Birth
City of Birth
Mobile number
Email address

Once the above information is received, we will begin transfer process and get back to you if we require any additional information. Note: The whole process takes approximately 5-7 business days.

How do I find my ASIC Key?

The ‘ASIC Key’ is a unique code specific to your business name. They usually look something like 1- 12345678901 (i.e. a 1, followed by a dash, then followed by 11 numbers. And you will need this in order to cancel your business name.

You can find it in your email inbox by searching for your “Welcome Letter” at the time you registered your business name, then open the PDF “Welcome letter” which contains your ASIC Key;

You can request it online following the next link at no cost: “https://asic.gov.au/online-services/online- keys/asic-key/requesting-an-asic-key/”. After you submit your request, the ASIC key will be delivered to your nominated business email address (within 24 hours).

What happens next?

Once your application has been submitted, ASIC will then send you a notice of intent to cancel the registration of your business name. Then after one month, ASIC will automatically cancel your registration and send another confirmation email with cancellation notice attached.

All the above-mentioned notices are sent to all business name holders (and any representatives) to tell them the business name registration will be cancelled.

Please note that if your business name is successfully cancelled before it is due for renewal, then ASIC is not obliged to reimburse you for the remaining registration period.

Stopping your business name transfer

In some instances, it is possible to stop a business name transfer if it is no longer required. However, you must contact us as soon as possible on 1300 006 263 or via email as sufficient time is needed to process your request. Please be aware that we can’t stop your business name transfer if:

your original registration has already been cancelled, or
the new holder has registered or applied to register the business name.

However, if the business name is still available you can register it using the transfer number.

Fees and charges

With respect to transferring a business name to a new ABN or entity, the fee for this is $379 and includes the following services:

cancelling the current registration of the business name in the name of the owner;
re-registering the business name in the name of the new owner;
monitoring, managing and updating you on the status of the application; and
one year business name registration
