An Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique 11-digit number that identifies your business to the government and community. An ABN doesn’t replace your tax file number, but it is used for various tax and other business purposes. The Australian Business Number (ABN) enables businesses in Australia to deal with a range of government departments and agencies using a single identification number. The ABN is a public number which does not replace your tax file number. ABN registration details become part of the Australian Business Register (ABR) which the ATO maintains on behalf of the Commonwealth. You can access the publicly available information contained in the ABR through the ABN Lookup website.

Not everyone is entitled to an ABN. First you must be an Australian resident for tax purposes and hold a current tax file number. In accordance with Australian Tax Office guidelines, you’re entitled to an ABN if you’re:

  • carrying on or starting an enterprise within Australia;
  • making supplies connected with Australia’s indirect tax zone; or
  • a Corporations Act company
Provided you supply all the information required, you will usually receive notification of your new ABN number within 2-4 business hours upon completion of the ABN application. If you omit information or it cannot be verified, an ABN will not be allocated immediately. Under these circumstances your application will be processed manually and can take up to 28 days. Yes, ABN’s can have unlimited business names assigned under them. Register more than one if you have additional brands you’d like to trade under or even different products or services you would like to name and protect.
If you decide to close your business and no longer require your ABN, you can cancel your ABN through the Australian Business Register. Before you cancel please make sure to check that you have met all your lodgment, reporting and payment obligations for all applicable government agencies you deal with and that all processes have been completed. You can conduct any number of businesses/activities under the same ABN provided they all operate under the same business structure. If your second or subsequent business operates under a different structure, you need to apply for separate ABNs for each new business structure.
If you’ve already got a sole trader ABN and want to register a Pty Ltd company, you’ll need to apply for a new ABN, as the company is treated as a separate entity. In addition, you can’t use your sole trader ABN when preparing invoices issued by the company.

If your company is trading in Australia, then it needs an ABN. Whether your sending invoices, or filing tax returns, your ABN is an essential part of the day-to-day running of business. Below is a list of tasks that definitely requires an ABN:

  • Issuing invoices to clients or paying invoices from suppliers
  • If you need to open a business bank account then you will require an ABN
  • If your business earns more than $75,000 per annum. It’s also important to note that if this is the case you will also need to register for GST
  • You’ll also need an ABN if employing staff so that you can pay their wages. This will enable them to be registered for PAYG (withholding tax). The same applies is you’re paying any monies to the directors of the company.
If you’ve already got a Partnership ABN and want to register a Pty Ltd company, you’ll need to apply for a new ABN, as the company is treated as a separate entity. In addition, you can’t use your Partnership ABN when preparing invoices issued by the company.
Goods and services tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia.
